This simple SATB composition strives to capture the peaceful beauty of the manger, while still gently foreshadowing the sufferings of the cross. A simple, haunting melody and approachable harmonization combine in an AABA form. The “B” section references the Gregorian Good Friday hymn, “Stabat Mater Dolorosa,” with a newly-composed Christmas text, and set against the central melody.
